How to get Codex resets, use banked resets, check expiry, understand assistant permissions, and distinguish paid resets from usage credits.

A Codex usage-limit reset restores an allowance; it does not mean deleting your project, clearing a conversation, or changing your subscription. You may have a scheduled refresh, an OpenAI-granted reset, or an eligible paid option. Start with the options actually shown in your signed-in account.
Policy checked October 31, 2026 (UTC) against OpenAI’s reset explanation and paid-reset guidance. Offers and eligibility can change; your account’s Usage view controls what is available.
What is a reset in Codex?
“Reset usage” means restoring the allowance covered by that reset. Four things are easily confused:
| Type | How it works | Where to check |
|---|---|---|
| Scheduled refresh | Your regular allowance becomes available again at its displayed time. | Signed-in Usage view |
| Automatic or global reset | OpenAI applies an offer to selected accounts and limits. It is not saved for later. | Original offer and account Usage |
| Banked reset | A one-time entitlement saved on your account, to redeem before its expiry. | Available resets in Usage |
| Paid instant reset | An eligible account purchases an immediate refresh. It cannot be saved. | Official in-product offer |
“Global” does not guarantee every account or every allowance is included. A reset also differs from API credits and pay-as-you-go usage credits. See OpenAI’s definitions.
How to get a Codex reset
Check your official Usage view before looking for another reset. Your options are to wait for the scheduled refresh, redeem a banked reset already available to you, or review an official instant-reset offer if your account is eligible. Promotional grants and qualifying referral offers have their own terms; there is no guaranteed recurring free grant.
This tracker’s Request reset button records community demand. Clicking it does not request an official account grant or restore your capacity. For your next refresh time, follow the account timing checklist.
How do I use a banked reset?
Open the desktop app’s Settings → Usage & billing, or the official web Usage settings. Choose the available reset, read which limits it covers and its expiration, then confirm redemption. Supported CLI versions also offer /usage → Redeem reset; if yours does not, use desktop or web.
Receiving a banked reset adds an entitlement; using it restores the covered allowance. Inspect Available for what remains and History for banked-reset activity. A received-history entry can describe an entitlement that has already been used or expired. See OpenAI’s redemption instructions.
What does “Allow Codex to use resets” mean?
OpenAI calls the desktop setting Allow your assistant to use resets. It lets the assistant redeem an existing banked reset when the applicable conditions are met. It does not create additional resets or guarantee a new grant.
Review the setting before you enable it. To keep redemption manual, turn it off. If a reset was used unexpectedly, inspect official banked-reset History and your conversation for the request or confirmation. Current conditions are in OpenAI’s reset guidance.
Do Codex resets expire?
Unused banked resets can expire. Read the exact redemption deadline and time zone in Available or the original offer; do not assume one universal number of days. The deadline is for redeeming the reset. After redemption, the refreshed allowance follows its own usage period.
An automatic reset is applied directly, and a purchased instant reset takes effect immediately; neither is a banked entitlement you can keep for later. Refer to OpenAI’s expiry and eligibility terms.
Can you buy a Codex reset?
OpenAI offers paid instant resets to selected Plus and Pro personal accounts. Eligibility varies; a plan name alone does not guarantee the option. If available, review Buy an instant reset in the official Usage settings or the in-product offer.
The reset applies immediately, even with usage remaining. It cannot be banked or scheduled. Under the current paid-reset guidance, the new weekly period starts with your first Work or Codex request after application, and the next weekly refresh is seven days after that request—not necessarily seven days after payment. Check your displayed account time.
Usage credits are a separate balance. Compare the options and prices shown in your own account. Codex Reset does not sell resets or take payment for them. Read the official purchase and billing explanation before deciding.
How many usage resets do you get?
There is no universal number of extra resets per person. Scheduled refreshes follow your plan and usage windows; free one-time grants follow the particular offer; banked availability is your account’s remaining balance; paid availability is a separate offer.
Questions such as “how many rate limit resets do you get?” therefore need the reset type first. The tracker’s event count is public history, not a count of entitlements in your account. For observed frequency and count definitions, read how often Codex resets happen.
Why did my weekly reset time change?
Redeeming a banked reset, receiving an automatic reset or using a paid reset can affect the next refresh time for the allowance involved. It does not by itself change your subscription billing date. Read the refreshed Usage display instead of continuing to plan against an old countdown.
If a global reset follows a redeemed banked reset, allowances do not stack to 200%, and the already-used banked entitlement is not returned. Which limits were affected depends on the offer; see OpenAI’s account-reset explanation.
Why did my usage not change?
Refresh or reopen Usage, and confirm the account, workspace and allowance you are viewing. A public announcement may cover another group or limit, while a banked grant may still need redemption. A receipt confirms a purchase, but does not alone confirm application.
Do not consume or buy another reset simply to test the first. For a paid reset that did not restore usage, contact official Support from the charged account. Use the timing checklist and the official paid-reset troubleshooting guidance.
Does a Codex reset fix an API 429?
Not necessarily. API-key usage has its own limits and billing. Inspect the error body and response headers, and follow OpenAI’s API rate-limit guidance. A public Codex event does not promise to clear API throttling.
Do not send an API key, password or session cookie to a third-party reset service. This tracker uses public evidence and cannot access or change your account.
