Codex Reset on Reddit: Claims vs Verified Events
What r/codex and Hacker News say about Codex resets — sorted into verified / unconfirmed / rumor, each with timestamp
Last updated: 2026-10-24
Community threads are useful leads, not proof. Below, each claim is traced to its original post, checked for original evidence, and given a verdict. For events that passed the tracker’s checks, see the verified Codex reset history.
How claims are sorted
- Verified: a public, dated source shows an OpenAI-side reset or announcement, and it meets the tracker’s recorded scope.
- Unconfirmed: someone reports something real-looking, but only from a private account view or without an original source.
- Rumor: a general assertion with no dates, numbers or source.
Community petition-style request counts do not trigger an OpenAI reset. The “Request reset” button on this site only records demand; it does not contact OpenAI or restore anyone’s limit.
Claims checked
1. “There is a tracker for Codex resets” — Hacker News, 2026-07-18
- Claim: A user submitted “Codex Resets”, linking a third-party tracker of Codex usage-limit resets (thread, posted 2026-07-18 23:24 UTC).
- Original evidence? The submission itself is a link to that tracker; the thread contains individual users describing what they saw on their own accounts. No official OpenAI statement appears in the thread.
- Verdict: Unconfirmed. The thread shows the topic was widely discussed, and individual reports are plausible, but they are account-level observations, not a public global event.
2. “Four usage resets in a week on a $200/month account” — Hacker News, 2026-08-01
- Claim: The poster wrote that their Grafana dashboard showed a fourth OpenAI usage reset in seven days, listing 7/25, 7/27, 7/28 and 7/31, all before their scheduled reset (thread, posted 2026-08-01 05:39 UTC).
- Original evidence? Only the poster’s own dashboard, with no screenshot, no time zone and no public source in the post.
- Verdict: Unconfirmed. A single account’s private window can move without any public global reset, so this does not establish a global event. See usage-limit reset mechanics.
3. “OpenAI resets everyone’s weekly limits every other day” — Hacker News, 2026-08-31
- Claim: A commenter said OpenAI “resets everyone’s weekly Codex limits back to 100% seemingly every other day” (comment, posted 2026-08-31 14:12 UTC).
- Original evidence? None given; “seemingly” marks it as an impression, offered in passing in a thread about another topic.
- Verdict: Rumor. The frequency is not backed by dates or sources. Compare it with the dated entries in the reset history instead.
What this page does not cite
r/codex discussions are an important part of this conversation, but a Reddit post is listed here only after its original page has been opened and its date confirmed. Posts that could not be retrieved and dated at the time of this update are intentionally left out rather than paraphrased from memory.
How to check a claim yourself
- Find the original post or comment and note its timestamp and time zone.
- Look for a dated, public source: an official announcement, a changelog or a reproducible screenshot.
- Separate “my account refreshed” from “a global reset happened”. Your own window is shown in your usage view; see when does Codex reset.
- Read how the tracker labels evidence in how Codex resets are verified.
